Counseling Information
- Counselors at Alton High School work with each student to help them development skills and learn about themselves, others, and the world around them.
- Individual counseling and support groups are offered to address specific problems students may be experiencing.
- Counselors and Academic Advisors meet with students each year during registration. They collaborate with teachers, parents, and students for academic success with equal concern for emotional and social growth and well-being.

Proper course selection with careful attention to student’s abilities, interests, and future goals is of primary importance. At Alton High School we utilize the Whole Student approach, in that we address attendance, academic, discipline, and the social emotional needs of each student.
Students are encouraged to seek the assistance of the counseling staff at Alton High School as well as parents and teachers in planning a high school program appropriate to their needs and abilities. For some students high school will be the last exposure to formal education. For others it will be a broadening of skills and knowledge leading to more specialized and advanced education.
Students should ask the following questions:
- What courses must I take to meet requirements for graduation from Alton High School?
- What courses shall I take in order to meet admission requirements of the technical school, college, or university which I expect to attend later?
- What courses will best fit my abilities, needs and interests?
- What courses will best prepare me to meet my responsibilities in the home, community, and world of work?
The counseling staff can provide students valuable information and assistance is evaluating each of the above questions and making informed decisions.
