Social and Emotional Learning
Alton Middle School is in its third phase of a grant that incorporates social and emotional learning into the curriculum and environment with an evidence-based program. Illinois is the only state in the nation to have state standards for social and emotional learning. The faculty and staff of Alton Middle School identify these standards as critical for an appropriate learni ng environment and student growth. Piasa House will be piloting Peace 4 Kids in 2009-2010 and we will implement the same program campus wide in 2010-2011. Our SEL vision is to address 5 specific skills that will assist in developing appropriate social and emotional characteristics in a safe, caring environment. Those 5 competencies are: self-awareness, relationship skills, social awareness, self-management, and responsible decision making. Through this program we hope to reduce risky behavior and promote academic performance and success in school and life. You are welcome to contact your House administrator to get in touch with an SEL House representative and learn more.
