HISTORY
Beginning in the fall of 2006, East and North Middle Schools merged to form a new school, Alton Middle School, which is now housed on the former Alton High School campus at 2200 College Avenue. This merger was one component of the District’s restructuring plan. Planning for the consolidation of these two schools began at the beginning of the 2003 school year with the formation of the Middle School Facilities Committee. This committee was primarily responsible for collecting data which was used to determine needs and prioritize them. Parents, staff, and students were surveyed and the results were compiled. One of the major concerns that confronted the committee was the overall structure of the new middle school. The decision was made to create Smaller Learning Communities which became one of four subcommittees. Other subcommittees that were established included Athletics, Performing Arts, and Exploratory. All of these groups provided recommendations for the new middle school. Their proposals were then submitted to the Superintendent and the Board of Education for approval.
After the Middle School Facilities Committee accomplished its goals, the Joint Decision-Making Team was formed in September, 2004 to continue planning. This group was comprised of representatives from all grades levels, including Unified Arts and Special Education teachers, a counselor, a librarian, school board member and union representative. This group met over a two year period and made decisions that included but were not limited to facility needs, Special Education, Unified Arts curriculum, athletics, scheduling, and policy and procedure.
Alton Middle School serves grades 6, 7, and 8 in the Alton Community Unit School District#11 with an enrollment of 1,564 students. The Alton Middle School attendance area includes federal housing projects, residential and business neighborhoods and a rural area. The ethnicity breakdown of our school is 43% African-American, 56% Caucasian and 1% other. Alton Middle School presently has a poverty level of 60%. The attendance rate is 92% and the student mobility rate is 52%. The school’s student population includes 20% special needs students with Individual Educational Plans.
