East Elementary Recieves the Fruit and Vegetable Grant!

East was the only school in the Alton School District to be awarded a fruit and vegetable grant by the State of Illinois.  We are excited about this opportunity to teach our students healthy eating habits.  The overall program goals are to create a healthier school environment by exposing students to a

variety of fruits and vegetables daily with the hopes of making a difference in children’s diets by increasing their liking of and consumption of fruits and vegetables.  When this program was piloted in 2002, the State found that students started eating more fruits and vegetables, ate less high-fat and high calorie foods, had better attention spans, were less hungry throughout the day, had fewer discipline problems, and felt better and visited the nurse less often.  Students cannot be served these fruits and vegetables during the breakfast or lunch program; instead, they must be served at other times during the day.  East initiated its program in October, 2009 one day a week but expanded it to everyday at the beginning of November.

For more information on how you and your famiily can eat healthier, check out these links.

East Elementary School's

ACE Program

Attendance

Counts

@ East

Part of our school mission is to "provide an education for all by promoting good attendance."  Without good attendance, students miss out on many lessons that cannot be duplicated at home. These lessons are vital for the educational growth of all children.  In an effort to reward those who come to school regularly, we have designed the ACE Program.

Weekly incentives:  Earn an Excellent Eagle ticket and get your name announced in the gym.

Monthly incentives: Get your name entered into a drawing for a prize per grade level , dance with the AHS mascot, win the traveling trophy for the classroom with the highest percentage of attendance.

Quarterly incentives: Win awards for the top class in each grade level, teachers choice, CD/Radio and/or other prizes.

Yearly incentive:  Students with perfect attendance for the whole year get to throw a pie at the Assistant Principal!

East Receives State Academic Improvement Award

East Elementary School received an Academic Improvement Award from the Illinois State Board of Education and has been placed on the 2008 Illinois Honor Roll along with 153 schools across the state.  We received this award because our students showed substantial gains and demonstrated exemplary progress in reading and math on last year’s state test results.  We also received a certificate commemorating our award.  At http://www.ilhonorroll.niu.edu, you can learn more about the Illinois Honor Roll, and see East listed under the Academic Improvement category.  We thank our dedicated staff for teaching our students the concepts necessary to excel in reading and math, and we thank our students for paying attention in class and making an effort to learn at their highest potential.  Of course, we thank our parents because we could not experience this success without your support and without you sending your child to school ready to learn.
